Why Cycle Belgium With Us?

Belgium has over 4,000 kilometres of signposted cycling routes across Flanders alone, a junction network used by millions of cyclists annually, and dedicated bike paths connecting city centres to open countryside without touching a main road. But knowing which routes to combine, which border crossings work best on a bike, and how to pace a multi-country itinerary takes more than a quick look at a map.

Since 2020 we've been planning and refining cycling holidays across Belgium and its neighbors. We know which stages work best in sequence, where the most rewarding stretches sit, and how to build a tour that feels like a genuine journey rather than a point-to-point transfer between tourist towns.

Every tour we plan for you includes:

  • Detailed self-guided itinerary with route notes and daily stage information

  • GPS tracks and a navigation app loaded before you leave

  • All accommodations booked, with breakfast included

  • Daily luggage transfer between hotels

  • Bike rental delivered straight to your first hotel

  • 24/7 support from our team throughout your trip

You ride. We handle everything else.

Why Belgium Is Easier Than It Looks

Most tours run April through October. May and June offer the best combination of mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and countryside in full bloom before summer crowds arrive.

September is equally reliable — quieter roads, warm days, and the Ardennes turning golden. July and August are the prime months for cycling but expect busier canal-side routes and city centres.

When to cycle in Belgium →

Belgium is one of Europe's most accessible cycling destinations for a wide range of riders:

  • Beginners and families — flat Flanders canal routes with clear Knooppunten signage require almost no navigation experience

  • Cultural riders — Bruges, Ghent and Brussels all sit directly on tour routes

Multi-country adventurers — our Amsterdam to Brussels tour crosses into the Netherlands, while the Five Countries tour extends into Germany, Luxembourg and France.

A few experiences stand out in Belgium:

  • The RAVeL network in Wallonia offers 1,300+ km of traffic-free trails on converted railway lines and canal towpaths — flat, quiet, and scenic.

  • Cycling into Bruges along the canals is one of the most distinctive urban cycling approaches in Europe — tree-lined towpaths leading directly into a medieval city centre.

  • The Ardennes reveal a completely different Belgium — forested hills, river valleys, and quiet roads that most visitors never expect to find here.

Belgium's cycling infrastructure is among the best in the world. The Knooppunten junction system means navigation is straightforward even without GPS — numbered posts at every intersection guide you from point to point.

Roads are well-surfaced, traffic-free paths are plentiful, and English is spoken widely across Flanders. In Wallonia, French is more common but tourist areas present no language barrier.

Belgium takes food seriously — and cyclists benefit enormously from that.

Every region has its own character:

  • Flemish stews and mussels in the north

  • Heartier Wallonian cooking further south.

Independent cafés appear every few kilometres on most routes. The beer and chocolate are as good as their reputation suggests — best appreciated after a day in the saddle.

Belgium's central position makes it a natural starting point for a longer multi-country journey.

Our Five Countries Cycling Tour already combines Belgium with the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France in a single 10-day trip.

If you'd like to explore individual neighbouring destinations, we also offer dedicated tours in Holland, Germany and France.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — and the misconception that Belgium is only for experienced cyclists is one of the most common we encounter. That reputation comes from the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, which take place on the country's most demanding cobbled climbs.

In reality, most of Belgium is flat, well-surfaced and exceptionally well-signed. The Knooppunten junction network makes independent navigation straightforward even for first-time tourers. Our Belgium tours are rated 2–3 out of 5 activity, making them among the most accessible in the portfolio.

Only if you seek them out. The famous Flemish cobbles appear on specific race roads — Koppenberg, Kwaremont, Paterberg — which are entirely avoidable on a touring itinerary unless you specifically want to ride them.

Our standard touring routes use smooth tarmac and dedicated cycling paths throughout. If you're an experienced cyclist who wants to include some classic Flanders roads as a side experience, that can be arranged — but it's never a default part of our tours.

Belgium uses the euro. Card payments are widely accepted across Flanders and Brussels, including small cafés and village restaurants. Wallonia is slightly less cashless in rural areas — carrying a small amount of cash is useful if your tour takes you into the southern countryside.

Belgium has three official languages: Dutch (Flemish) in the north, French in Wallonia, and German in a small eastern region. In practice, English is spoken widely across all tourist areas, and most hotel and restaurant staff switch effortlessly.

Our tours include route notes in English throughout, and our team is reachable if any language situation becomes complicated on the road.

May, June and September are the strongest months — mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and quieter roads than peak summer. April is perfectly fine with the right kit.

July and August work well but accommodation on popular canal routes around Bruges can be tight — booking early matters more in summer than at any other time.

The Spring Classics in March–April bring large crowds to Flanders, which is worth knowing if you're planning around that period.

Most tours start in Brussels — one of Europe's best-connected hubs with direct Eurostar, Thalys and ICE rail services from London, Paris, Amsterdam and Cologne. Brussels Airport has direct train and bus connections from most European cities. We recommend Omio and SNCB for exploring transportation options between the main Belgian hubs.

Bikes are permitted on international trains with advance reservation. Detailed arrival instructions are included in your tour pack.

Yes — Belgium is ideally placed for cross-border touring.

Our Five Countries Cycling Tour already connects Belgium with the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France in a single 10-day trip.

For individual neighbouring destinations, we offer dedicated tours in Holland, France and Germany.

The Ardennes is hillier than Flanders — no question. But it's not extreme. The rolling forested terrain is manageable for cyclists of moderate fitness, particularly on an e-bike, and the scenery and quieter roads make it one of the most rewarding parts of Belgium to ride through.

Our Five Countries Cycling Tour passes through this region and is rated 4/5 on our activity level scale — the most demanding Belgium tour we offer, and best suited to riders comfortable with longer daily distances and consistent climbing.

Discover Europe's finest cycling holidays and bike tours — iconic routes, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable adventures for every kind of rider.
