Why Ride Slovenia With Us?

Most cycling companies offer Slovenia as one destination among many. For us it's different — we are based here. Slovenia is home, and that changes everything about what we're able to offer.

We know which side of the Vršič Pass to descend for the best light in the afternoon. We know the Soča Valley guesthouses that have been welcoming cyclists for decades and the ones that opened last season. We know the gravel tracks through the Triglav National Park that don't appear on any commercial route map, and the road climbs above Kobarid where Pogačar reportedly still trains in the off-season.

That local depth is the difference between a good Slovenia cycling week and an exceptional one. Slovenia also uniquely offers both self-guided and guided tours — the only destination in our portfolio where you can choose to ride with a local expert by your side every day if that's what suits you best.

Every tour we plan for you includes:

  • Detailed self-guided itinerary with route notes and daily stage information

  • GPS tracks and a navigation app loaded before you leave

  • All accommodations booked, with breakfast included

  • Daily luggage transfer between hotels

  • Bike rental delivered straight to your first hotel

  • 24/7 support from our team throughout your trip

You ride. We handle everything else.

Why Cyclists Keep Coming Back to Slovenia

May, June and September are the three prime months — ideal temperatures, long days and all passes open. May brings wildflowers and empty roads.

September is arguably the finest month: cooler, golden and harvest season in the wine regions.

July and August are perfectly good but Lake Bled and the Julian Alps get busy. The Soča Valley and Karst region stay quieter throughout summer.

Four routes define Slovenia for cyclists:

  • Vršič Pass — 1,611 m, 50 hairpin bends through the heart of the Julian Alps. Slovenia's most celebrated climb.

  • Soča Valley — emerald river road from the Alps to the Adriatic through gorges, waterfalls and WWI history.

  • Juliana Bike Trail — 300 km loop around Triglav National Park with nearly 10,000 m of climbing.

  • Karst & Vipava Valley — rolling wine country between the Alps and the Adriatic, warm and largely flat.

Slovenia works for every type of cyclist:

  • Road cyclists — Alpine passes, quiet valley roads and some of the cleanest tarmac in Central Europe

  • Gravel riders — the Soča corridor, forest tracks above Kobarid and Triglav's plateau roads are world-class

  • MTB riders — bike parks throughout the Julian Alps and Pohorje Hills, with trail networks for every level

Slovenia is the only destination in our portfolio where you can choose between 3 riding styles.

  • Self-guided gives you full freedom — GPS tracks, pre-booked accommodation and luggage transfer, with our team available if you need us.

  • Private guided puts a local expert alongside you every day — someone who grew up riding these roads and knows every shortcut, viewpoint and coffee stop worth stopping for.

  • Joining a group gives you the opportunity to join a group of like minded cyclists and tourists of the same fitness level as yourself and explore Slovenia's beauty together

All options cover the same routes. The choice comes down to how you prefer to ride.

Slovenia consistently surprises cyclists with how good it is. Roads through the Julian Alps and Soča Valley are immaculate and quiet, with drivers respectful and accustomed to cyclists. The country's compact size means daily stages feel achievable without sacrificing scenery.

Slovenia has an incredibly rich culture. English is widely spoken throughout tourist areas.

Accommodation in family-run guesthouses is excellent value — genuinely warm hospitality at prices well below equivalent Alpine destinations in Austria or Italy.

Slovenia punches well above its weight in cycling culture — producing Pogačar and Roglič has made the sport genuinely part of national identity.

Key events include the Tour of Slovenia (UCI ProTour, June), Juriš na Vršič — a popular September hillclimb race up the iconic pass — and the Franja BTC gran fondo, one of the oldest and most beloved sportives in Central Europe.

Slovenia sits at the crossroads of four countries and connects naturally into several neighbouring tours.

Croatia is the most popular pairing — the Istrian peninsula and Parenzana Trail are reachable within a day's ride from the Slovenian coast. Italy borders Slovenia to the west, with the Dolomites accessible from the Julian Alps. For riders thinking bigger, Slovenia is also the starting point of the Trans Dinarica trail connecting all eight Balkan countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — more so than most Alpine destinations. The trekking and e-bike tours are specifically designed for riders who want to experience the Julian Alps and Soča Valley without the demands of serious climbing. Daily distances are manageable, roads are quiet and the scenery rewards slow travel as much as fast riding.

For those who want a genuine challenge, the road cycling and MTB tours at 4/5 and 5/5 are among the most demanding in our portfolio. Slovenia works across the full spectrum — the key is choosing the right tour.

May, June and September are the three strongest months across all tour types. June combines reliable weather with fully open passes and long evening light. September is arguably the finest month — cooler temperatures, harvest season in the Karst and Vipava wine regions and noticeably fewer tourists around Lake Bled.

July and August are good but the Julian Alps and Lake Bled get busy. The Soča Valley and southern regions stay quieter. November through March the high passes close and touring stops — Slovenia is firmly a seasonal destination.

It depends entirely on how you prefer to ride. Self-guided suits cyclists who want autonomy — you set your own pace, stop when you want and have our GPS tracks and pre-booked accommodation handling the logistics. Guided suits those who want local expertise alongside them every day — someone who knows these roads intimately, can read the weather, adjust the route and share the kind of knowledge that no guidebook contains.

Both options cover the same routes and include the same standard of accommodation. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you decide based on your experience and what you want from the week.

Demanding but achievable for regularly cycling riders. The climb from Kranjska Gora gains around 900 m over approximately 12 km — the cobbled hairpin bends on the upper section are the most challenging stretch. The descent into the Trenta Valley drops 1,300 m over 26 further hairpins.

On an e-bike the pass is accessible to almost any fitness level. On a road or gravel bike it requires solid climbing legs and low gearing. It is not a climb to attempt on a hybrid with heavy panniers.

It depends on your chosen tour. Road bikes suit the Alpine pass routes and valley roads. Gravel bikes open up the Soča corridor, forest tracks and the Juliana Bike Trail's mixed surfaces. MTB is the right choice for the dedicated mountain bike tours in the Julian Alps and Pohorje Hills.

All bikes are available through us and matched to your specific tour before you travel.

If bringing your own, our pre-departure notes specify exactly what tyre width and gearing we recommend.

Exceptionally so — particularly compared to equivalent Alpine destinations in Austria, Switzerland or northern Italy. Family-run guesthouses in the Soča Valley and Julian Alps offer genuine warmth and excellent food at prices well below what the scenery would command further west.

The euro is the currency, card payments are accepted everywhere and English is widely spoken.

Three things.

  1. Compactness — you can ride from Alpine passes to the Adriatic coast in a single week, something impossible in France, Switzerland or Austria.

  2. Authenticity — Slovenia remains genuinely undiscovered compared to the Dolomites or Chamonix, with roads that feel like discoveries rather than pilgrimage routes.

And local knowledge — we are based here, which means our routes reflect how these roads are actually best ridden, not how they look on a map.

Ljubljana Airport has direct connections from most European cities — London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Zurich among others. The capital Ljubljana is a beautiful city worth a day before or after your tour.

For tours starting in the Soča Valley or Julian Alps: Trieste and Venice Marco Polo airports in Italy are convenient alternatives with strong budget airline connections, both within 1.5 hours of Bovec or Kranjska Gora by transfer. Full arrival instructions are included with every booking.
