Why Ride Croatia With Us?

Croatia looks straightforward to plan — until you start cross-referencing ferry timetables, island accommodation availability in peak season, and which coastal roads are actually suitable for loaded bikes. The logistics here are more layered than most European cycling destinations.

We've been on these routes ourselves — through Istria's hill towns, along the Dalmatian coast, and onto the islands by ferry. That firsthand knowledge shapes every itinerary we build. We know which ferry connections work for cyclists, which island hotels genuinely accommodate bikes, and how to sequence a multi-day coastal tour without the itinerary falling apart if a connection runs late.

Every tour we plan for you includes:

  • Detailed self-guided itinerary with route notes and daily stage information

  • GPS tracks and a navigation app loaded before you leave

  • All accommodations booked, with breakfast included

  • Daily luggage transfer between hotels

  • Bike rental delivered straight to your first hotel

  • 24/7 support from our team throughout your trip

You ride. We handle everything else.

Why the Adriatic Was Made for Cycling

  • April, May and September–October are the sweet spots — warm, sunny, and far less congested than summer on the coast and islands.

  • July and August are perfectly rideable but Dalmatian roads and island ports get busy. If you're set on summer, Istria handles the crowds better than the south.

  • How about winter? Realistic but only around Dubrovnik, which stays mild year-round.

When to cycle in Croatia →

Two completely different cycling experiences within the same country:

  • Istria — rolling hills, truffle villages, quiet inland roads and the Parenzana Trail. Gentler terrain, ideal for first-timers

  • Dalmatia — dramatic coastal roads, steep island climbs, UNESCO old towns, and ferry crossings between stages

Both regions feature on our multi-day tours — most riders wish they had more time for each.

One of Istria's defining cycling experiences — a 120 km converted railway trail crossing from Trieste through Slovenia into Croatia, finishing at the Roman town of Poreč on the Adriatic coast.

Gradients are gentle throughout, passing medieval hilltop villages, vineyard valleys and pine forests that most coastal tourists never reach.

Everything you need to know about the Parenzana →

  • Istria — quiet back roads, well-surfaced, minimal traffic even in summer

  • Dalmatia — our routes avoid the busiest coastal highways and prioritise quieter inland alternatives

  • Language — English spoken widely in tourist areas throughout

Currency — Croatia uses the euro since 2023; carry cash on smaller islands where card payment is unreliable

Croatia rewards slow travel at the table as much as on the road.

Istria produces black and white truffles alongside excellent olive oils and local wines. Dalmatia brings grilled fish, slow-cooked lamb and the mineral whites of the Pelješac peninsula.

Most routes pass directly through wine-growing areas — small producers rarely turn away a cyclist stopping to taste.

Croatia's islands range from almost entirely flat to seriously hilly — choosing the right one matters:

  • Krk — accessible by bridge, varied terrain, good warm-up stage

  • Hvar — Croatia's sunniest island, steep climbs with extraordinary coastal views

  • Korčula — compact, quieter than Hvar, with medieval streets and excellent wine roads

Frequently Asked Questions

April–June and September–October are the strongest months — warm, reliably sunny, and far less congested than peak summer. The sea is warm from June onwards, making swimming stops genuinely refreshing rather than optimistic.

July and August are hot — inland routes in particular can be punishing in midday heat. Coastal and island routes are manageable with early starts, but accommodation fills quickly and prices reflect it. September is arguably the finest month of all.

More than most people expect — particularly on the islands. Istria is rolling and manageable, with gentler gradients suited to a wide range of riders. The Dalmatian coast and islands are a different proposition entirely — Hvar, Korčula and the Pelješac Peninsula involve real climbs, with steep ascents rewarded by exceptional coastal views and long descents.

Our tours are rated accordingly: Istrian routes sit at 2–3/5, while Dalmatian coastal tours reach 4–5/5 for experienced riders. If in doubt, consider reading how we breakdown our tours based on activity levels.

Ferries are a genuine part of the experience rather than just a logistical necessity. Bikes are permitted on all Croatian national ferries operated by Jadrolinija, with a small supplement for the bike. On our tours, ferry timetables and crossings are built into the itinerary — you won't be left working it out on the day.

Some smaller island routes use catamaran services, which do not always accept bikes — this is accounted for in our itinerary planning.

Croatia joined the eurozone in and now uses the euro from January 2023 onwards. Card payments are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops. On smaller islands and in rural areas, cash is still useful — carry some euros for smaller purchases, ferry supplements and market stops.

Most tours begin in Split or Trieste (for Istrian routes).

Split Airport has direct connections from most major European cities throughout the season — it's one of the busiest summer airports in the Adriatic. Trieste is best reached via flight to Venice Marco Polo or Trieste Airport, both well connected.

Consider using Skyscanner or alternatives when booking your flights.

Detailed arrival instructions are included in your tour pack.

Istrian tours yes — Dalmatian tours less so. The Best of Istria and Bolzano to Pula tours are rated 2–3/5 and suit occasional cyclists comfortable with multi-day riding. The Dalmatian coastal and island tours involve consistent climbing and are better suited to riders with some touring experience.

An e-bike makes almost any Croatia tour accessible regardless of activity level — and given the terrain, it's one of the destinations where we'd most actively recommend it.

Yes — and most cyclists do.

Croatia's Adriatic waters are exceptionally clear, particularly from June onwards, and most daily stages pass beaches, coves or harbour fronts with easy swimming access. It's worth packing a lightweight swimsuit in your daypack on any coastal or island tour.
