Why Cycle Lanzarote With Us?

Lanzarote is the most visually immediate cycling destination in the archipelago — the landscape announces itself within the first kilometre and doesn't let up. What takes longer to understand is how to ride it well.

The trade winds that make the island so pleasant in summer change character depending on which direction you're heading. The roads through Timanfaya look similar on a map but ride completely differently. Knowing which coastal stretches deserve a full day and which are better as a linking stage — that specificity is what separates a well-planned Lanzarote week from one that leaves you feeling you missed something.

Every tour we plan for you includes:

  • Detailed self-guided itinerary with route notes and daily stage information

  • GPS tracks and a navigation app loaded before you leave

  • All accommodations booked, with breakfast included

  • Daily luggage transfer between hotels

  • Bike rental delivered straight to your first hotel

  • 24/7 support from our team throughout your trip

You ride. We handle everything else.

Timanfaya National Park is the reason Lanzarote rides unlike any other island in Europe.

300 volcanic cones, hardened lava fields stretching to the horizon and roads that cut through a landscape so stark it has served as a film set for other planets. The ground still radiates heat a metre below the surface — geysers in the park demonstrate it daily.

Cycling through it rather than viewing it from a coach window is an entirely different experience. No other cycling route on the continent covers terrain like this.

Lanzarote's secret weapon — and the reason it works when other destinations don't.

The northeast trade winds keep temperatures on the island remarkably stable year-round — cooling the coast in summer when Gran Canaria and Tenerife bake at low altitude, and rarely dropping low enough in winter to affect riding comfort.

The practical result: Lanzarote is the most genuinely year-round island in the archipelago. There is no month where a cycling week here is a gamble on the weather.

Lanzarote is the most accessible of the three Canary Islands — and the most immediately spectacular from the first kilometre.

  • First-time island cyclists — flatter than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, with manageable daily distances and striking scenery from day one

  • Experienced riders — the northern coastal roads and Famara climb offer real challenge when sought out

  • E-bike riders — the terrain opens up entirely, including sections that standard bikes find demanding

  • Winter sun seekers — warm, dry and rideable every month of the year

Lanzarote has no bad month — but some are better than others:

  • October through May: brings the most comfortable climbing temperatures and the island at its quietest.

  • December through February: is peak season for cyclists escaping northern European winters — book accommodation well in advance.

  • June through September: is where Lanzarote outperforms its neighbours — the trade winds keep coastal temperatures manageable while Tenerife and Gran Canaria demand very early starts. Summer on Lanzarote is genuinely pleasant on the bike.

Lanzarote connects naturally into a wider Canary Islands cycling trip — or a return to the Spanish mainland.

  • Tenerife — the natural next step for riders who want more climbing. Mount Teide and the Road Climbing Challenge are a different proposition entirely from anything on Lanzarote

  • Gran Canaria — dramatic mountain interior and the archipelago's most varied terrain, best suited to experienced riders

  • Mainland Spain — direct flights from Arrecife to Madrid, Barcelona and beyond in under two hours

Inter-island flights run frequently and take 30–45 minutes — combining Lanzarote with a second island in a single two-week trip is straightforward and one of the most rewarding ways to experience the archipelago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Less flat than its reputation suggests — but significantly more accessible than Tenerife or Gran Canaria.

The island's highest point is Peñas del Chache at just 670 m — modest by Canary Island standards. That said, the coast sits at sea level and most routes head inland almost immediately, meaning climbing is a constant companion rather than an occasional challenge. The north is noticeably hillier than the south, and the Famara massif involves real ascent.

Most regularly cycling riders find the terrain manageable. An e-bike removes the question entirely.

Yes — and it's worth knowing about before you arrive.

The northeast trade winds are what keep Lanzarote's temperatures so stable year-round. On the bike, they're a different matter. The northwest of the island around Famara and La Santa is the most exposed — a headwind here can reduce your pace to a crawl regardless of fitness. The south and central areas are more sheltered.

The practical approach: plan daily routes with wind direction in mind, start early and accept that some days you'll earn your coffee stop more than others. Our route notes flag the most exposed sections in advance.

One of the best in Europe — and it has been for decades.

Lanzarote hosts the Ironman Lanzarote — one of the toughest full-distance triathlons in the world. The island's combination of year-round riding, consistent conditions and quiet roads has made it a premier training base for triathletes alongside pure cyclists. Local infrastructure reflects that — bike-friendly accommodation, repair shops and cycling services are well developed across the island.

Yes — helmets are legally required for cycling on all roads outside urban areas in Spain, which includes the vast majority of cycling routes on the island. This applies to adults and children alike.

We always recommend wearing a helmet regardless of the legal position. Helmets are available to include with your bike rental if needed — confirm at the time of booking.

Among the smoothest in the Canary Islands — and better than most cyclists expect.

Main cycling routes use well-maintained tarmac with minimal traffic, particularly away from the resort areas on the east coast. Drivers on the island are generally courteous — a mandatory 1.5 metre overtaking clearance applies under Spanish law. Some rural tracks and coastal paths are rougher, but these don't feature on our main tour route.

The one genuine variable is sand on the road in exposed sections near the dunes — worth knowing about but not a consistent issue.

La Geria is Lanzarote's wine region — and one of the most visually striking landscapes on the island.

Thousands of individual vines sit in volcanic ash craters ringed by low stone walls, a farming technique developed after the 18th-century eruptions to capture moisture from the night air. Cycling through it is a completely different experience from any other wine region in Europe.

Most local bodegas welcome passing cyclists for tastings. Malvasia — the island's signature white wine — is worth stopping for. Our tour route passes directly through La Geria.

A wider range of cyclists than the Canary Islands' overall reputation suggests.

  • Beginners and occasional cyclists — the most accessible of the three islands, with manageable daily distances and well-surfaced roads

  • Intermediate riders — the northern coast, Famara and inland routes provide genuine challenge when sought out

  • Triathletes — consistent conditions and quiet roads make it a premier training base year-round

  • E-bike riders — the terrain opens up entirely, including sections that standard bikes find demanding

  • Winter sun seekers — warm, dry and rideable every month of the year
