Cycling in England

England is one of those cycling holiday destinations that looks straightforward to plan — until you realize how much of it is worth riding and how little of it appears on the obvious itineraries. England rewards those who know where to look — and that knowledge takes time to build.

Since 2020 we've been planning and refining cycling routes across England's national parks, coastlines and countryside. We know which stretches of the South Downs Way justify a full day and which are better as a half stage. We know the Lake District roads that stay quiet even in August, and which sections of the Jurassic Coast bike tour route deliver the most for the least climbing.

Every tour we plan for you includes:

  • Detailed self-guided itinerary with route notes and daily stage information

  • GPS tracks and a navigation app loaded before you leave

  • All accommodations booked, with breakfast included

  • Daily luggage transfer between hotels

  • Bike rental delivered straight to your first hotel

  • 24/7 support from our team throughout your trip

You ride. We handle everything else.

The England Nobody Sees From a Motorway

Five English tours worth putting on your list:

England's cycling season runs April through October:

  • May and June are the strongest months — long days, countryside in full bloom and roads at their quietest before school holidays begin.

  • September is equally rewarding — golden light, emptying routes and the best weather of the autumn.

  • July and August are perfectly rideable but popular routes through the Cotswolds and Cornwall get busy. Book accommodation well in advance for summer departures.

England's cycling infrastructure is more developed than most visitors expect.

Dedicated cycling trails, converted railway paths and canal towpaths take riders off main roads across most regions. The National Cycle Network covers over 12,000 km — much of it traffic-free.

Road surfaces vary — rural lanes are generally well-maintained, though narrower country roads require attention. Drivers in cycling-heavy areas like the Cotswolds and Yorkshire are well accustomed to sharing the road.

England works across a wider range of cyclists than its reputation suggests:

  • Beginners and leisure riders — the Thames Path and Cotswolds tours are flat to gently rolling, well-signed and manageable for occasional cyclists

  • Cultural riders — Roman walls, medieval market towns, cathedral cities and coastal fishing villages appear at the end of almost every stage

  • Experienced cyclists — the Coast to Coast and Hadrian's Cycleway involve real daily distances and varied terrain

  • E-bike riders — the Cotswolds E-Bike Holiday is one of our most popular tours in the portfolio

England rewards slow travel at the table as much as on the road.

  • The Cotswolds means honey-stone village pubs, local ales and cream teas at a farmhouse café mid-morning.

  • Cornwall means fresh crab sandwiches, pasties and the best seafood in Britain eaten overlooking the harbour.

  • Yorkshire means hearty portions, independent breweries and market town bakeries that have been operating for generations.

Every region has its own character — and most of it is found a short detour off the main cycling route.

Most tours start from London, Oxford or Exeter — all directly connected from across Europe by rail and air.

  • London is Europe's best-connected hub — Eurostar from Paris and Brussels, direct trains from most major UK cities

  • Exeter is the natural gateway for Cornwall tours — under 2.5 hours from London Paddington by train

  • Oxford is the starting point for the Thames Path — 1 hour from London by rail

Bikes are permitted on most National Rail services with advance reservation. Full arrival instructions are included with every booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Cotswolds Bike Tour or the Thames Path from Oxford to London.

The Cotswolds offers gentle countryside, excellent road surfaces and accommodation in some of England's most beautiful villages — forgiving terrain with exceptional scenery. The Thames Path follows the river on largely flat, traffic-free paths through market towns into London — straightforward navigation and natural stopping points throughout.

Both are rated 2–3/5 and are among the most accessible English bike tours in our portfolio.

May, June and September are the three strongest months — long days, mild temperatures and roads at their quietest.

  • May — countryside at its most vivid, quieter than summer and accommodation easier to secure

  • June — the longest days of the year, ideal for covering distance without pressure

  • September — golden light, emptying roads and often the most settled weather of the season

July and August are perfectly rideable but popular routes through Cornwall and the Cotswolds get busy. Book well in advance for summer departures.

Less than most visitors expect — on the right routes.

Our tours prioritize dedicated cycling paths, converted railway trails and quiet country lanes wherever possible. The National Cycle Network takes riders off main roads across most regions. Rural lanes in the Cotswolds, Yorkshire and Cornwall carry minimal traffic outside of tourist towns.

The main caution is narrow country lanes in peak summer — drivers navigating unfamiliar roads in rental cars can be less predictable. Our routes are planned to minimise time on the busiest stretches.

No — helmets are not legally required for adults on cycling tours in England.

That said, we always recommend wearing one regardless of the law — particularly on routes that include road sections shared with traffic. If renting a bike through us, helmets are available to include with your rental.

It depends on the tour.

  • Thames Path and canal routes — a hybrid or trekking bike is the most comfortable choice on mixed surfaces

  • Cotswolds and countryside routes — gravel or hybrid suits the combination of tarmac lanes and occasional trail sections

  • Coast to Coast — a gravel bike handles the varied terrain most comfortably

An e-bike is available on most English tours and is our strongest recommendation for anyone who wants the scenery without the climbing. Our Cotswolds E-Bike Holiday is one of the most popular e-bike tours in the portfolio!

Yes — England connects naturally into Scotland and Wales, both of which are in our portfolio.

The Coast to Coast finishes close to the Scottish border, making it a natural starting point for a wider British Isles trip. For riders wanting to explore further, our Scotland and Wales tours are both within easy reach by rail from any English starting point — no flights required.
