How To Choose The Right Bike Tour?

Not sure which cycling holiday is right for you? This guide walks through every decision: destination, terrain, bike type and who you're travelling with.

Not sure where to start? You're not alone.

Most people arrive here knowing they want to cycle Europe — but not which country, which bike, or how hard to push. This guide walks you through the decisions that actually matter, one question at a time.

First: How Do You Actually Like to Ride?

This is the most important question — and it's not about fitness. It's about what you want the day to feel like.

Some riders want the scenery to be the point. A manageable distance, good roads, a town worth arriving in and energy left to enjoy the evening. The ride is the vehicle, not the destination.

Others want the ride itself to be the challenge. A mountain pass, a serious climb, the satisfaction of covering real distance over demanding terrain. The hotel is where you recover, not the reward.

Most people fall somewhere between the two — and the good news is our portfolio covers the full spectrum, from 1/5 flat riverside tours to 5/5 Alpine road challenges. The honest question to ask yourself: on the last day of a hard ride, do you feel satisfied or just relieved it's over?

What Kind of Landscape Do You Want to Ride Through?

Europe offers more cycling variety per kilometre than almost anywhere else in the world — but the terrain shapes everything: the difficulty, the bike choice, the best time of year and the destinations that deliver on what you're imagining.

  1. Rivers and valleys suit riders who want flat, well-signed routes with cultural depth at every stop. The Rhine, Elbe, Danube and Douro are the standout options — consecutive days of manageable distance through historic towns, vineyards and river scenery that rarely disappoints.

  2. Coastlines add ferry hops, warm evenings and the particular satisfaction of arriving somewhere by the sea. Croatia's Adriatic coast, Portugal's Atlantic routes and Greece's Peloponnese are the strongest in the portfolio.

  3. Mountains and passes are for riders who want the climbs. The Dolomites, Swiss Alps, Norwegian fjords and Pyrenees demand serious fitness — but deliver experiences that flat routes simply can't.

  4. Mixed terrain — a bit of everything — is where most of our riders end up. Slovenia is the best single-country example: Alpine passes, river valleys, coastal paths and gravel tracks, all within a country smaller than Switzerland.

One Country or Several?

Both formats work well — but they suit different types of traveller.

Staying in one country gives you depth. More time in the saddle, more stops along the route, a better feel for a place than a multi-country tour allows. It also simplifies logistics considerably. Our strongest single-country options for first-time tourers: Slovenia, Portugal, Denmark and Holland.

Crossing borders adds variety and the particular satisfaction of watching the landscape, language and food shift beneath your wheels. Our multi-country tours are among the most popular in the portfolio — they work best for riders who've already done a single-country tour and want more range, or for those with a specific cross-border route in mind. We offer multi-country tours in Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Austria, France and Belgium.

The practical consideration worth knowing: border-crossing tours require more logistical coordination — different hotel partners, different road standards, occasionally different GPS systems. We handle all of it, but the itinerary is less flexible than a single-country tour if plans change.

What Bike Do You Want to Tour On?

The bike choice shapes the destination as much as the other way around. A quick guide:

  • Road bike — for pure tarmac performance and serious climbing. Best for Mallorca, Tenerife, the Dolomites, the Swiss Alpine passes and the Pyrenees. Fastest and lightest, but limited to good road surfaces.

  • Gravel bike — the most versatile option in the portfolio. Handles tarmac, gravel tracks and converted rail trails equally well. Our default recommendation for most multi-day European tours.

  • E-bike — available across all 21 destinations. The right choice for couples with different fitness levels, first-time tourers who want the experience without fitness anxiety, and anyone tackling a destination with serious elevation. The bike changes. The experience doesn't.

  • Mountain bike (MTB) — for terrain that road and gravel bikes can't access. Singletrack, forest trails and volcanic mountain roads. Best for Slovenia, Tenerife and Scotland.

Who Are You Travelling With?

The answer changes the tour more than most people expect.

Carefully curated activity levels ensure most of our bike tours are accessible regardless of age or fitness
  • Solo and Couples → The self-guided format is built for independent travel. No group, no compromise, no waiting. Traveling solo and as a couple works across every destination in the portfolio. Cycling as a couple is the most popular format according to our experience with our customers.

  • Families with children → Route choice matters more here than anywhere else. Flat terrain, traffic-free paths and short daily stages make the difference between a holiday everyone enjoys and one nobody finishes. Family-friendly bike tours cover exactly this.

  • Seniors or mixed-age groups → E-bikes and carefully curated activity levels make most destinations accessible regardless of age. Senior-friendly cycling tours covers the destinations and tour formats we recommend most.

  • Larger groups of friends, colleagues, family or even a cycling club → We have a selection of group cycling holidays — for mixed-ability groups who want a private tour on their own schedule.

Self-Guided or Guided?

The short answer: most cyclists choose self-guided, and most are glad they did.

Self-guided tours give you complete independence — GPS navigation, pre-booked accommodation, daily luggage transfer and 24/7 support, all without a guide setting the pace or a group to wait for. It's the format that dominates our portfolio for good reason: it delivers the logistics of an organised trip with the freedom of independent travel.

Guided tours suit riders who want a local expert alongside them every day — someone who knows the roads intimately, reads the weather and adjusts the plan accordingly. Currently available in Slovenia, our home destination. More destinations in development.

The honest guide to choosing:

  • First-time touring cyclist who wants independence → self-guided

  • Confident cyclist who wants local knowledge on the road → guided

  • Less confident navigating in an unfamiliar country → guided

  • Want to travel privately at your own pace → self-guided
