Why Cycle Gran Canaria With Us?

Gran Canaria earns its nickname — the miniature continent — and the cycling reveals exactly why. Ride through landscapes that feel like entirely different countries all in one day! The lush green north, the lunar volcanic interior and the sun-baked south that greets you at the airport and gives nothing away about what lies inland.

What that variety demands is honest planning. The mountain roads that make Gran Canaria exceptional are also the ones that punish underprepared riders. Knowing which climbs reward the effort and how to sequence the island's contrasting landscapes within a single itinerary is what our Gran Canaria tours are built around.

Every tour we plan for you includes:

  • Detailed self-guided itinerary with route notes and daily stage information

  • GPS tracks and a navigation app loaded before you leave

  • All accommodations booked, with breakfast included

  • Daily luggage transfer between hotels

  • Bike rental delivered straight to your first hotel

  • 24/7 support from our team throughout your trip

You ride. We handle everything else.

The Island Nicknamed a Mini-Continent

The Cycling Tour of Gran Canaria is built around what makes the island genuinely exceptional — the volcanic interior and the dramatic contrast between north and south.

Eight days, rated 4/5 on our activity scale. The itinerary is sequenced to make the most of the island's variety:

  • The volcanic interior — Roque Nublo, Tejeda and the Pico de las Nieves summit roads

  • The green north — terraced farmland, pine forests and villages most visitors never reach

  • The southern coast — dry, warm and a natural way to finish the week

GPS, accommodation, luggage transfer and 24/7 support all included.

Gran Canaria's interior is what separates it from every other Canary Island.

Roque Nublo at 1,813 m — a volcanic monolith rising from the caldera — is the defining landmark of the island and one of the most striking things you can ride towards anywhere in the archipelago.

The roads through Tejeda and up to Pico de las Nieves at 1,949 m are sustained, demanding and rewarded with views that stretch to Teide on a clear day.

This is the part of Gran Canaria most visitors never see. Cyclists do.

Two completely different islands separated by an hour's riding.

  • The south — dry, barren, clear skies almost every day. Resort coastline that gives nothing away about what lies inland.

  • The north — lush, terraced, genuinely green. Pine forests, cloud-catching valleys and villages like Teror that feel nothing like the island's tourist reputation.

Our tour takes in both. The contrast between them, experienced from the saddle in a single week, is what Gran Canaria does that no other Canary Island can replicate.

Gran Canaria is the most demanding of the three Canary Islands on a standard bike — and the most rewarding for riders who arrive prepared.

What makes it different from Tenerife:

  • More variety — different roads, different characters, different views at the top rather than everything pointing towards a single summit

  • More sustained — long consistent gradients that accumulate rather than spike

  • More isolated — the mountain interior carries far less traffic than Tenerife's main Teide approach roads

An e-bike transforms the experience without changing the route or the scenery — our strongest recommendation for anyone uncertain about the daily elevation.

Gran Canaria's north and south have noticeably different climates — worth knowing before you book.

October through May is the prime window — comfortable temperatures, mountain roads at their best and the northern valleys at their most vivid green.

June through September works well in the south, where the arid terrain stays dry and warm. The north can be cloudier in summer, but the interior and mountain roads stay cool and rideable year-round — one of Gran Canaria's genuine advantages over lower-altitude destinations.

Gran Canaria connects naturally into a wider Canary Islands trip or a return to the Spanish mainland.

  • Lanzarote — the most accessible island in the archipelago and a natural counterpoint to Gran Canaria's demanding terrain

  • Tenerife — Mount Teide and the Road Climbing Challenge for riders who want more after Gran Canaria

  • Mainland Spain — direct flights from Las Palmas to Madrid, Barcelona and beyond in under two hours

Inter-island flights run in 30–45 minutes — combining Gran Canaria with a second island in a two-week trip is straightforward and one of the most rewarding ways to experience the archipelago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honestly — not the ideal starting point.

Gran Canaria's terrain is the most demanding in the archipelago. The climbs are long, the gradients consistent and the daily elevation significant. Riders who arrive expecting a relaxed island tour are regularly surprised by how much the island asks of them.

That said, an e-bike changes the equation considerably — the same roads, the same scenery, without being overwhelmed by the climbing. If you're newer to cycling and set on Gran Canaria, an e-bike is our strongest recommendation before considering a standard bike.

Still having trouble choosing? This choosing guide will help you clarify what still may be confusing.

Harder in a different way — and worth understanding before you book.

Tenerife's climbing is defined by Teide — long, steady gradients on well-known approach roads. Gran Canaria is less predictable. The climbs are varied, steeper in places and less forgiving — some sections touch gradients that Teide's main approach roads never reach. The island also has no single defining summit to pace yourself around.

Most experienced cyclists who have ridden both consider Gran Canaria the more technically demanding of the two. Arrive prepared or bring an e-bike.

Two stand above everything else on the island.

  • Pico de las Nieves — Gran Canaria's highest point at 1,949 m, approached from sea level over approximately 96 km with nearly 2,000 m of climbing. One of the longest continuous ascents in Spain.

  • Roque Nublo — not the highest but the most visually dramatic. An 80-metre volcanic monolith rising from the caldera, surrounded by roads that rank among the finest on the island.

Both feature on our tour itinerary.

Year-round and generally excellent — but the north and south are noticeably different.

  • The south — dry, sunny and warm almost every day of the year. Average temperatures of 18–25°C year-round

  • The north — catches more cloud and moisture from the trade winds, greener and occasionally wetter

  • The interior — cooler at altitude. Pack arm warmers for anything above 1,400 m regardless of conditions at the coast

Gran Canaria is one of the few destinations in Europe where cycling between December and February is genuinely reliable — warmer and drier than Mallorca in the same window.

A road bike or e-road bike is the natural choice for the mountain routes.

Road surfaces on Gran Canaria are exceptionally well-maintained — the island has invested heavily in its cycling infrastructure and the main climbing roads are among the smoothest in the Canary Islands. Narrow road bike tyres are not a concern on the main routes.

For riders uncertain about the climbing, an e-road bike delivers the full Gran Canaria experience without the risk of arriving underprepared.

Get in touch before booking and we'll confirm the right setup for your specific tour.

Yes — helmets are legally required on all roads outside urban areas in Spain, which covers virtually all cycling routes on the island. The rule applies to all ages. We always recommend wearing one regardless and helmets are available to include with your bike rental.

November through April is the prime window — warm, dry and the mountain roads at their most stable. This is also when professional teams base themselves on the island for winter training, which speaks for itself.

May through October works well too, particularly in the south. The north can be cloudier in summer but the interior stays cool and rideable year-round — one of Gran Canaria's genuine advantages over lower-altitude destinations.

Fly into Las Palmas Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) — one of the busiest airports in Spain with direct year-round connections from the UK, Germany, Netherlands and Scandinavia. Flights from northern Europe typically run 3.5–4.5 hours.

The airport sits on the eastern coast and transfer times to most cycling bases in the south are under 45 minutes. Full arrival and transfer instructions are included with every booking.

When booking we recommend considering the flight times on the airport’s website or using Skyscanner.

Discover Europe's finest cycling holidays and bike tours — iconic routes, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable adventures for every kind of rider.
