Why Ride Germany With Us?

Germany's cycling infrastructure is outstanding — routes are signed, surfaces are maintained, and accommodation along the major river paths is plentiful. What's less obvious from the outside is how different each river route actually feels. The Moselle is intimate and winding, its steep vineyard terraces dropping straight to the water. The Rhine is grander, more dramatic. The Elbe is wilder, quieter, with stretches that feel entirely untouched.

Choosing the right route for the right rider is where our knowledge earns its keep. We've tested and refined these itineraries ourselves — we know which sections of the Romantic Road deserve more than a single night, where the Rhine gorge is best experienced from the saddle rather than a ferry deck, and how to sequence a Prague-to-Dresden tour so the best days don't all cluster at one end.

Every tour we plan for you includes:

  • Detailed self-guided itinerary with route notes and daily stage information

  • GPS tracks and a navigation app loaded before you leave

  • All accommodations booked, with breakfast included

  • Daily luggage transfer between hotels

  • Bike rental delivered straight to your first hotel

  • 24/7 support from our team throughout your trip

You ride. We handle everything else.

Why Germany's Rivers Were Made for Cycling

May, June and September are the strongest months — mild temperatures, long days and the countryside at its best. September adds harvest season in the Rhine and Moselle wine regions, which is a genuinely good reason to time a tour around it.

July and August are busy on popular stretches. The Alps and Lake Constance open fully from mid-May.

When to go cycling in Germany →

Germany's most popular long-distance route and one of the finest in Europe.

Our tour starts in Prague and follows the river through the dramatic sandstone gorges of Saxon Switzerland National Park before arriving in Dresden — one of Germany's most beautifully restored cities.

Largely flat, mostly traffic-free, and a different landscape around almost every bend.

Complete guide to the Elbe Cycle Route →

  • Dedicated riverside paths on all major routes, well-surfaced and clearly signed

  • Bikes permitted on regional trains with a Fahrradkarte — useful for skipping sections or recovering after a long day

  • English widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and tourist areas across all tour regions

  • Germany uses the euro; card payments work almost everywhere

  • The Rhine and Moselle produce some of Germany's finest Rieslings — best appreciated at a riverside terrace with the vineyard in view.

  • Bavaria means pretzels, roast pork and unfiltered wheat beer in generous measures.

  • The Romantic Road passes through Franconia, where local wine and smoked meats appear on almost every menu.

The 65 km stretch between Bingen and Koblenz is the most celebrated section of any river cycling route in Europe. UNESCO World Heritage status, 40+ castles on the surrounding hillsides, steep vineyard terraces — all visible from a quiet path running alongside the water.

It's one of those stretches where you stop far more often than planned. Budget extra time for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Elbe River tour from Prague to Dresden is the most accessible — largely flat, mostly traffic-free, and split into manageable daily stages along one of Germany's most scenic rivers. The Rhine River tour is equally flat along the river valley and suits riders of most activity levels.

The Romantic Road and Bavaria Cycling Holidays involve more varied terrain and suit riders with some multi-day experience.

We also recommend helping yourself with our activity levels breakdown guide.

Yes — and it's one of the things that makes Germany genuinely practical for self-guided touring. Bikes are permitted on regional trains and most IC services with a separate Fahrradkarte bicycle ticket. ICE high-speed trains have limited spaces that must be booked in advance.

This matters on a practical level: if a stage turns out to be longer than expected, or weather closes in, hopping on a train to the next stop is a straightforward option. We factor this into every German itinerary.

To book international or domestic train rides in Germany see schedules on Deutsche Bahn.

It's both — and that's part of the appeal. The Romantic Road connects medieval towns from Würzburg to the Bavarian Alps across 460 km, and yes, those towns are popular. But between them, the route runs through quiet farmland, river valleys and vineyard country that most visitors travelling by coach never see.

Cycling it gives you access to the places in between. The stops — Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Augsburg — are genuinely worth the detour.

More than you'd expect for a Western European country. Card payments are widely accepted in cities and hotels, but rural Gasthäuser, farm shops and smaller village cafés along the cycling routes frequently operate cash-only. Carrying €50–100 in cash at all times is genuinely useful rather than just precautionary.

No — helmets are not legally required for adults cycling in Germany.

Some courts have found cyclists partly liable in accidents when not wearing one, which is worth knowing. We always recommend wearing a helmet regardless of the legal position, particularly on routes that include any road sections shared with traffic.

September is the finest month for the Rhine and Moselle in particular. Harvest season brings the vineyards to life — grapes on the vines, cellars open for tasting, and a noticeably festive atmosphere in the riverside villages. The weather stays warm, the crowds thin out after August, and the light on the terraced hillsides in early autumn is genuinely spectacular.

It depends on the tour:

  • The Elbe tour starts in Prague — well connected by train from most Central European cities and by direct flights from across Europe.

  • Rhine and Moselle tours typically start near Frankfurt or Koblenz, both major rail hubs.

  • Bavaria and Romantic Road tours connect via Munich, one of Germany's best-served international airports. Full arrival instructions are included with every booking.

For international train tickets to Germany you can buy tickets on Trainline or Omio.
